Most school and local sports teams require sports physicals, also known as pre-participation physicals. School and sports physicals in Dr. Sarmiento’s office take place in a kid-friendly environment with a team that carefully tracks your child’s growth and development.
The importance of school & sports physicals
Whether or not your school or team require it, a sports physical is a great way to see that your athlete can safely play. It’s also required in most states. Most importantly, a thorough examination gives your doctor the chance to check for potential respiratory conditions or injuries that require treatment or close monitoring as the season progresses.
In some cases, the doctor may schedule a follow-up appointment or provide a referral to a specialist. A physical may also reveal that prescriptions, such as an inhaler for asthma, need to be updated.
What to expect from your sports physical
On the day of your child’s physical, be sure to bring any necessary forms and documents you need the doctor to sign. During your appointment, you can expect a few routine tests and questions that will help our team get a better idea of your child’s preparedness.
- Check vitals
- Vision exam
- Ear, nose, and throat examination
- Checking the heart, lungs, and abdomen
- Joints and flexibility assessment
- Medical history review
Please note that a school physical or sports physical should not be treated as a substitute for a regular checkup or well-child visit. While a sports physical is designed to bring up issues related to a child’s ability to participate in sports, regular checkups help to reveal issues that may have nothing to do with physical fitness.
